The new Israeli shekel (also spelled shekel) is the official currency of the State of Israel. Its ISO 4217 code is ILS but it is also abbreviated as NIS. The symbol for the new shekel is ₪, which combines the two Hebrew letters used for its abbreviation. In May 2006, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange introduced shekel derivative trading, making the shekel available for futures contract trading on forex markets.
